Which additive do I need when? Differences and similarities between Oil Additive, Motor Protect, and Cera Tec: what you need to know about LIQUI MOLY's three wear-protection additives. Over the years, engine components are subjected to high loads due to friction, high temperatures, and pressure. The surfaces of metal parts always have microscopic unevenness and roughness. Direct friction between them leads to wear and damage in the long run.

In short: parts such as pistons or cylinders wear out over time. This process can and must be counteracted, as component wear can negatively affect engine performance and service life. Consequently, the main task is additional engine protection. And that is exactly what our three oil additives do in the fight against engine wear.

The question remains: for whom and when is each of these three additives suitable.

Basic physical protection with Oil Additive

The classic among LIQUI MOLY additives. This was the first product we brought to market. Even after 60 years, it is still available, now with an improved formula. It contains MoS2 — the abbreviation for Molybdenum Disulfide.

How Oil Additive works

The low-viscosity solid lubricant contained within — MoS2, forms a highly durable lubricating film on all moving and rotating metal surfaces. It reduces friction and ensures smoother operation of the assemblies. Cera Tec is a high-tech additive for physical and chemical wear protection. Consequently, it combines the advantages of Oil Additive and Motor Protect. Unlike Oil Additive, Cera Tec uses tiny ceramic particles as a solid lubricant instead of MoS2. The chemically and thermally highly stable microceramic component ensures smooth engine operation. The protective effect of Cera Tec lasts for up to 50,000 kilometers.

How CERA TEC works

The active chemical agent in Cera Tec smooths the surfaces. Additionally, ceramic particles fill small unevenness in the metal and thus prevent direct friction between metal surfaces. The graphic shows how CERA TEC combines the operating principles of the two previous products — Motor Protect and Oil Additive: a microceramic solid lubricant and a chemical reaction ensure optimal protection against wear.
